Researchers from Newcastle University and the University of Glasgow recently found that patients with type 2 diabetes can achieve symptom relief through weight loss and that 86% of type 2 diabetes can be reversed within a year if weight loss is 15 kilograms or more. The study has been published in the journal "The Lancet" entitled "Primary care-led weight management for remission of type 2 diabetes (DiRECT): an open-label, cluster-randomized trial."

Important facts about diabetes
Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or the body can not effectively utilize the insulin it produces. In diabetic patients, about 95% of patients with type 2 diabetes, and type 2 diabetes is mainly due to overweight and lack of physical activity. Diabetes has long been considered a disease that can not be reversed. Although major pharmaceutical companies have developed a variety of drugs for the treatment of diabetes, including sulfonylureas, thiazolidinedione drugs, SGLT-2 inhibitors, DPP-4 inhibitors [vildagliptin (intermediate 3-amino-1-adamantanol)], biguanides, etc. However, so far, there is no real way to reverse diabetes. Once suffering from diabetes, you need to take lifelong medication.
"Double vicious cycle" hypothesis
The "double vicious circle" hypothesis suggests that type 2 diabetes is closely linked to excess fat in the liver and islets.
  • When too much energy intake, the liver will synthesize more fat, triggering insulin resistance and liver glucose synthesis dysfunction. In order to regulate glucose synthesis, insulin concentration in the liver will increase, but it also can promote the synthesis of liver fat, exacerbate the liver fat accumulation level.
  • Increased liver fat will cause more fat to be transported throughout the body. The insulin secretion will be affected by the fat, resulting in elevated blood sugar. Then it will lead to increased insulin secretion in the compensatory range, promote the synthesis of intrahepatic fat, which form vicious cycle.
Diabetes remission clinical trials
In the trial, 298 people with diabetes were recruited and their BMI was high (BMI 27-45). Subjects were divided into control group and intervention group. The control group was still receiving standard diabetes treatment from general practitioners, while the intervention group targeted for weight loss. The primary endpoint of the study included weight loss (15kg) and remission of diabetes mellitus (glycated hemoglobin<6.5%). Within 12 months, the intervention group achieved an average of 10 kg of weight loss, 46% of patients (4% in the control group) met the criteria for diabetes mellitus, and 74% (18% in the control group) no longer needed medication control blood sugar! The researchers also found that the more weight loss, the more likely it is to achieve the goal of reversing diabetes. When the weight loss is more than 15kg, the proportion of those who achieve the symptoms relie remission can reach 86%.
Type 2 diabetes is a life-changing disease over time that brings with many serious complications. The above test shows that the relief of type 2 diabetes and weight loss are closely related, which may change the lives of millions of people. However, it should be noted that this needs to be done under the guidance of a doctor so as to avoid adverse consequences.
