Researchers from the Scripps Research Institute have investigated the mechanisms of antibodies against to the Ebola virus, including the recent treatment of antibodies to the Ebola virus. Two Americans infected with Ebola virus, when the two Americans accepted the experimental antibody mixture called ZMapp, the infection symptoms have been significantly controlled and alleviated.
Researchers Professor Erica Ollmann Saphire said that at present they are using electron microscopy and X-ray crystallography to analyze the structure of these antibodies, relying on the image they found the immune system molecules combined with Ebola virus and Ebola virus How to block the functioning of the immune system, which is important for the late development of new targeted drugs that block viral replication.
Ebola virus is a potent virus that tends to cause 25%~90% of individuals in infected individuals to die, and the virus infects other healthy individuals with the patient's blood and body fluids; the research revealing the susceptibility of the Ebola virus surface, so that scientists can use the shortcomings of the virus surface to design targeted drugs (antiserum) to kill the virus.
Zmapp therapy is currently in the laboratory research phase, which is currently the most useful antibody mixed preparation, but also need to be improved; currently National Institutes of Health has invested 28 million US dollars for its research to detect this antibody mixed preparations, The researchers hope that it can be modified to be mixed formulations which is able to neutralize the Ebola virus furthest.
An idealized antibody mixture can eliminate the symptoms of the patient and improve the prognosis of the infected individual, not only as a preventive measure but which can protect the individual from the virus.
