3D printing technology is currently used in the manufacturing industry, or print some teeth or bones in accordance with the needs of customers in the medical industry. Recently, scientists have proposed the use of 3D printing can print orthopedic implants with fully biodegradable materials, these materials will not only promote tissue regeneration after implantation, and will be absorbed by the body in the next few years, which greatly reducing the side effect of operation.

Degradable orthopedic internal fixation must meet several general requirements: the material must be non-mutagenic, non-antigenic, non-carcinogenic, non-toxic, non-teratogenic, and has anti-corrosion and histocompatibility.

Scientists from the Russian Federal University of Siberia have developed a very unique way to make orthopedic implants, which use polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) that is a fully biodegradable material (PHB is available through β-butyrolactone monomer or ethyl 3-hydroxybutyrate monomer), achieve by 3D printing technology and computer tomography. The material is effectively laminated together, eliminating the need for certain chemical structures and adhesives.

Recently, South Korean scientists have developed a new material for 3D printing, is a polycaprolactone (PCL) made of medical polymers (see below). By combining this PCL material with 3D printable tricalcium phosphate (TCP, a substance that promotes bone regeneration), this 3D print will be able to construct bone implanted faces. It is said that this material is easier to insert, the average operation time is expected from the original eight hours shortened to two hours, and there is no permanent side effects of the implant. It is the first developed 3D print medical materials in Korea. The research team has applied to the MFDS for clinical use.

As scientists continue to research and innovate, there will be more biodegradable new materials in the future, through the use of 3D implantation, bone reconstruction field will be greatly benefited.
