Statins, such as atorvastatin calcium, cerivastatin, rosuvastatin, etc., can effectively reduce blood lipids, is a common pharmacy of hyperlipidemia. In addition, statins can also inhibit the vascular endothelial inflammation, stable atherosclerotic plaque, improve vascular endothelial function. In a recent study published in the American Journal of Cardiology Association, researchers from the Karolinska Institute reported the discovery of an immunological effect of statins in addition to the recognized effects, and presented a new episodes that statins drugs can effectively prevent heart attack.
Statins are a common drugs used to prevent cardiac arrest and so on. Although it has long been known that statins have antiinflammatory effects, but whether the immune system is affected, it is not yet clear. The reason why statins are effective is because they can lower blood cholesterol levels.
With the increase in heart disease cases around the world in recent years, cardiovascular disease has become the main cause of death in humans. Atherosclerosis is the main cause of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases such as coronary heart disease, cerebral infarction, peripheral vascular disease and so on. Atherosclerosis is a visible plaque on the vessel wall, consisting of dead cells and oxidized LDL cholesterol and two types of immune cells—T cells and dendritic cells. T cells and dendritic cells are the main participants in chronic inflammation. Researchers have studied the interaction of two important immune cells. They found that oxidized low-density lipoprotein cholesterol can be activated by dendritic cells to activate immune T cells, statins can lock T cells and stimulate the production of anti-inflammatory T cells, but also through a certain way to promote anti-inflammatory effects of dendritic cells.
But is there any side effect of statins? The problem still needs to be solved. Large meta-analysis showed that most types of tumors were reduced. In this study, statins were found to inhibit gene activators (microRNAs), including let7c, a specific gene activator that inhibits tumor growth, and let7c is involved in oxidized low density lipoprotein-induced T cell activation. But statins can inhibit let7c, and if let7c plays an important role in the tumor of cancer patients, the effect of statins may be unfavorable. However, statins can reduce inflammation, reduce the risk of cancer, and at the same time large meta-analysis does not show a general increase in cancer risk.
This is the first time researchers have demonstrated that immunotherapy is able to treat atherosclerosis and how statins have been used to prevent cardiovascular disease through this new specific immune mechanism, which also explains most of the usefulness of statins.
