Alzheimer's Disease
  By 2050, there will be more than 130 million people with Alzheimer's disease (AD) around the world, it has received much attention. A large number of experts are working hard to cure or prevent Alzheimer's. This article will summarize the current drugs and the progress of 2016.
Current Drugs
  Although there are no drugs to cure Alzheimer's disease, many drugs have been developed, including cholinesterase inhibitors, anti-amyloid β-proteins, anti-tau phosphorylation, anti-oxidative stress, anti-apoptosis, NMDA receptor antagonists, synaptic connections, anti-inflammatory drugs, neurotropic metabolites, and neural stem cell transplantation.
  Because even mild illnesses are irreversible signs of brain cell death, anti-apoptotic drugs is always a hot topic. Patent No. CN102336720A (2-aminothiazole derivative and its preparation method and application) discloses a medicine for treating and preventing Alzheimer's disease. The compound is prepared by the reaction of a substituted aromatic piperazine and a substituted 2-aminothiazole. It has the advantages of suitable molecular weight, stable structure, penetrating cell membrane and small side effects. It can also be used to treat other neurodegenerative diseases.
Research Results in 2016
  Scientists have been marching all the way to Alzheimer, and in the past year, a lot of research has been done:
Treatment and improvement
Nature: Researchers at the University of London have found that bromomidine, a drug commonly used to lower the intraocular pressure in patients with glaucoma, may be able to reduce the formation of amyloid in the retina, which is thought to be associated with the morbidity of Alzheimer (doi: 10.1038/cddis.2016.397);
Science: Researchers from Merck Laboratories have developed a new treatment against Alzheimer's disease that does not cause any harmful side effects. The new therapy utilizes a compound called verubecestat that reduces β amyloid levels by blocking enzymes in the body of patients called BACE1 (doi: 10.1126/scitranslmed.aad9704);
npjAMD: Researchers from the Salk Institute have found that THC and other compounds in cannabinoids promote the removal of β-amyloid from cells. It provides a new clue to the development of new therapies for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (doi: 10.1038/npjamd.2016.12);
FAN: Researchers from the Islamic Assad University have discovered for the first time that probiotics can improve the cognitive function of the human brain (doi: 10.3389/fnagi.2016.00256);
PNAS: Researchers from the Imperial College of Technology have succeeded in suppressing Alzheimer's disease in mice by using viruses to transport specific gene fragments into the mouse brain. This study may provide insights into novel therapies for the treatment of neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease (doi: 10.1073/pnas.1606171113).
Genes
New Vaccines
  Researchers from the University of Carolyn in Sweden have developed a novel vaccine that stimulates the production of specific antibodies that can specifically target tau-proteins that act in a pathological state, and that also can be coupled to a carrier molecule to produce large immune response. It brings additional benefits that do not exist in the human body, thus avoiding the immune response to the body itself (doi: 10.1016/S1474-4422(16)30331-3).
  Researchers from the United States and Australia have discovered a novel potential vaccine that targets abnormal amyloid β-amyloid and tau proteins, if can be successfully treated in preclinical trials, it will bring great help (doi: 10.1038/srep28912).
  Whether voluntary or not, we need to face the disease. Although there are few drugs for Alzheimer's disease, with the development of upstream products (such as 2-aminothiazole derivatives) and scientists' relentless efforts, we firmly believe that Alzheimer's disease will eventually be cured.
