On July 22, 2014, Waters announced the acquisition of all assets of Rapid Evaporation Ionization Mass Spectrometry (REIMS) technology from MediMass, including patent applications, software, databases and specialty knowledge of REIMS technology. The specific transaction amounts were not disclosed.
"REIMS technology significantly enhances Waters' position in the market of life sciences and demonstrates Waters' commitment to a wide range of applications," said Rohit Khanna, vice president of global marketing and information at Waters." The acquisition, and our recent agreement with Prosolia for the exclusive application of desorption electrospray ionization (DESI) technology in clinical applications are an important part of the Waters Emerging Health Sciences program. Its technology directly from sample ionization is a strategic technology and we expect it will impact the application of mass spectrometry throughout the health sciences. "
REIMS technology enables "Intelligent Knife (iKnife)", a device that is in development and may be used for real-time diagnostics during surgery. Waters is committed to exploring the applicability of this application to all applicable regulatory requirements. To date, no regulatory authorities have approved such equipment for clinical use.
The origins of Waters and REIMS technology date back three years, when Waters collaborated with MediMass and Imperial College London to focus on developing REIMS technology. The goal of the collaboration is to continue to promote REIMS technology in health science applications.
REIMS is an ionization technique that can be used as an ion source for mass spectrometry direct injection analysis. To date, REIMS technology has demonstrated the ability to apply real-world ionospheric sampling at atmospheric pressure, such as food safety, microbiology, and clinical diagnostic applications.
REIMS produces instantaneous signal information well suited for Waters mass spectrometers. The REIMS ion source will be commercialized to complement the Waters universal ion source platform. (Suzhou Yacoo from the website of Instrument Information)
